Mel Brooks Presents: Young Frankenstein

I'm enjoying movie FRIGHT night on this Hallow's Eve! It's time for me to get the popcorn ready, order my pizza and turn off the lights. I always have to set the stage for a goose bump hair-raising night of HORROR movies! Nevertheless, this Mel Brooks classic has always been a permanent fixture on my Halloween movie list. I always have to throw in a little bit of humor. ♥

A Little Halloween History

[source: wikipedia]

Halloween or Hallowe’en (a contraction of All Hallows’ Evening) is an annual holiday observed around the world on October 31, the night preceding All Hallows Day. Much like Day of the Dead celebrations, the holiday has ancient origins tied to seasonal change, harvest time, and festivals honoring the dead. Typical Halloween activities include trick-or-treating (also known as "guising"), attending costume parties, carving jack-o'-lanterns, lighting bonfires, apple bobbing, visiting haunted attractions, playing pranks, telling scary stories, and watching horror films.

Pre-Christian influences

Historian Nicholas Rogers, exploring the origins of Halloween, notes that while "some folklorists have detected its origins in the Roman feast of Pomona, the goddess of fruits and seeds, or in the festival of the dead called Parentalia, it is more typically linked to the Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-an or sow-in)", derived from the Old Irish Samuin meaning "summer's end". Samhain was the first and by far the most important of the four quarter days in the medieval Irish and Scottish calendar and, falling on the last day of Autumn, it was a time for stock-taking and preparation for the cold winter months ahead. There was also a sense that this was the time of year when the physical and supernatural worlds were closest and magical things could happen. To ward off these spirits, the Gaels built huge, symbolically regenerative bonfires and invoked the help of the gods through animal and perhaps even human sacrifice.

Christian influences

Halloween is also thought to have been heavily influenced by the Christian holy days of All Saints' Day (also known as Hallowmas, All Hallows, and Hallowtide) and All Souls' Day. Falling on November 1st and 2nd respectively, collectively they were a time for honoring the Saints and praying for the recently departed who had yet to reach heaven. By the end of the 12th century they had become days of holy obligation across Europe and involved such traditions as ringing bells for the souls in purgatory and "souling", the custom of baking bread or soul cakes for "all crysten [christened] souls". It was traditionally believed that the souls of the departed wandered the earth until All Saints Day, and All Hallow's Eve provided one last chance for the dead to gain vengeance on their enemies before moving onto the next world. To avoid being recognised by a soul, Christians would wear masques and costumes to disguise themselves, following the lighted candles set by others to guide their travel for worship the next day. Today, this practice has been perpetuated through trick-or-treating.

In Britain the rituals of Hallowtide and Halloween came under attack during the Reformation as Protestants denounced purgatory as a "popish" doctrine incompatible with the notion of predestination. In addition the increasing popularity of Guy Fawkes Night from 1605 on saw Halloween become eclipsed in Britain with the notable exception of Scotland. There and in Ireland, they had been celebrating Samhain and Halloween since the early Middle Ages, and it is believed the Kirk took a more pragmatic approach towards Halloween, viewing it as important to the life cycle and rites of passage of local communities and thus ensuring its survival in the country.

North American almanacs of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century give no indication that Halloween was recognized as a holiday. The Puritans of New England, for example, maintained strong opposition to the holiday and it was not until the mass Irish and Scottish immigration during the 19th century that the holiday was introduced to the continent in earnest. Initially confined to the immigrant communities during the mid-nineteenth century, it was gradually assimilated into mainstream society and by the first decade of the twentieth century it was being celebrated coast to coast by people of all social, racial and religious backgrounds.

Etymology

The word Halloween is first attested in the 16th century and represents a Scottish variant of the fuller All-Hallows-Even ("evening"), that is, the night before All Hallows Day. Although the phrase All Hallows is found in Old English (ealra hฤlgena mรฆssedรฆg, mass-day of all saints), All-Hallows-Even is itself not attested until 1556.

The Hellbound Train

The Hellbound Train
poem written by Anonymous

A Texas cowboy lay down on a barroom floor,
Having drunk so much he could drink no more;
So he fell asleep with a troubled brain
To dream that he rode on a hell-bound train.

The engine with murderous blood was damp
And was brilliantly lit with a brimstone lamp;
An imp, for fuel, was shoveling bones,
While the furnace rang with a thousand groans.

The boiler was filled with lager beer
And the devil himself was the engineer;
The passengers were a most motley crew-
Church member, atheist, Gentile, and Jew,

Rich men in broad cloth, beggars in rags,
Handsome young ladies, and withered old hags,
Yellow and black men, red, brown, and white,
All chained together-O God, what a sight!

While the train rushed on at an awful pace-
The sulphurous fumes scorched their hands and face;
Wider and wider the country grew,
As faster and faster the engine flew.
Louder and louder the thunder crashed
And brighter and brighter the lightning flashed;
Hotter and hotter the air became
Till the clothes were burned from each quivering frame.

And out of the distance there arose a yell,
"Ha, ha," said the devil, "we're nearing hell"
Then oh, how the passengers all shrieked with pain
And begged the devil to stop the train.
But he capered about and danced for glee,
And laughed and joked at their misery.
"My faithful friends, you have done the work
And the devil never can a payday shirk.

"You've bullied the weak, you've robbed the poor,
The starving brother you've turned from the door;
You've laid up gold where the canker rust,
And have given free vent to your beastly lust.
"You've justice scorned, and corruption sown,
And trampled the laws of nature down.
You have drunk, rioted, cheated, plundered, and lied,
And mocked at God in your hell-born pride.

"You have paid full fare, so I'll carry you through,
For it's only right you should have your due.
Why, the laborer always expects his hire,
So I'll land you safe in the lake of fire,

"Where your flesh will waste in the flames that roar,
And my imps torment you forevermore."
Then the cowboy awoke with an anguished cry,
His clothes wet with sweat and his hair standing high.

Then he prayed as he never had prayed till that hour
To be saved from his sin and the demon's power;
And his prayers and his vows were not in vain,
For he never rode the hell-bound train.

Do Not Whisper To The Wind ~ by Rayne Avalotus

A poem/song often told to small children by the superstitous. Though this piece is often heard most often in human Santharian villages, it is believed to have originated from stories of the Forbidden Zone in Northern Sarvonia and dark places like the Water Marshes.

Do Not Whisper To The Wind
by Rayne Avalotus

Do not whisper to the wind,
For wind winds far and deep,
Deep down into the shadow land
Where evil creatures sleep.
The echo of thy uttered word
Can wake them, make them creep!

Do not whisper to the wind,
For seething monsters hear;
The winds will carry monologues
To meet their careful ears,
And they will rise up from their tombs
To plague the world with fear.

Do not whisper to the wind
For demons know, they say,
Where rests thy sleepy, pretty head
When darkness swallows day,
And in the night they’ll come on thee
And steal thy soul away!

Do not whisper to the wind,
For evil’s waiting there
With anxious claws and open ears
Just listening to the air.
And waiting for a foolish child
To whisper unaware.

Do not whisper to the wind,
For beasts come leather skinned
With eyes aglow in sickly hue
And figures tall and thinned.
Thou may not, shall not, cannot
Ever whisper to the wind!

"T'WAS HALLOWEEN NIGHT "

"T'WAS HALLOWEEN NIGHT "
Written by Dolores Faye Thorn

T'was Halloween night and all through the house
Creatures were stirring, bugs, cats, and a mouse
The pumpkins were carved into faces with care
In hopes that a candle would soon be placed there
With ma in her apron fixing platters of sweets
We'd settled our brains for a long night of treats
When out on the lawn there arose such a roar
I sprang to my feet and ran to the door
And what to my wandering eyes should appear
But a red deviled monster with a big yellow spear
Like a bat from a cave I ran - still he came
I thought I'd escaped but he called out my name
Mr. Thorn - Mr. Thorn - please don't be afraid
It's me, little Jimmy in this masquerade
The moon on the lawn glowed a bright orange cast
And I thought I saw witches on brooms flying past
White sheet like things floated, they looked just like ghosts
But the skeleton with bones clacking, it scared me the most
Someone looked like a vampire his face a ghastly pale hue
I finally realized it was Harry all covered with glue
That kid like a spider so lively and quick
I knew in a moment it was my neighbor's son Nick
One sweet little princess, so lovely was she -
Whatever was she doing in this strange company?
When all of the goblins pulled mask from there head
I knew that this night there was nothing to dread
Then this strange purple monster greeted me
and I said, "Who are you?"
He gave me no answer just hollered Boooooooooo….
And putting a finger aside one large eye
He got in his space ship and flew to the sky
I knew I had never seen anything like that before
I watched him in wonder quickly shutting my door
But I heard him exclaim ere he flew out of sight
Happy Halloween to all - and have a real spooky night!

Disney Buys Lucasfilm For $4 Billion; "Star Wars 7" Set For Release In 2015. Wow! :o AMAZING! :)

written by Michael Thurston
Wednesday October 31, 2012

LOS ANGELES — Walt Disney Co announced Tuesday it is buying "Star Wars" director George Lucas' film company for $4 billion, and plans to revive the classic sci-fi series starting with a new movie in 2015.

The entertainment giant plans a new trilogy in the legendary franchise, launched with the original "Star Wars" movie in 1977, while Lucas himself said it was "time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers."

"Star Wars 7" will be released in 2015, "with more feature films expected to continue the Star Wars saga and grow the franchise well into the future," said Disney, announcing the deal to buy pioneering movie company Lucasfilm.

In a conference call with investors, Disney said it planned a new trilogy with films eight and nine, after which more "Star Wars" movies would be made every two to three years.

The deal "combines a world-class portfolio of content including Star Wars, one of the greatest family entertainment franchises of all time, with Disney's unique and unparalleled creativity," said Disney chief Robert Iger.

"Lucasfilm reflects the extraordinary passion, vision, and storytelling of its founder, George Lucas," said Iger, head of global entertainment giant Disney, which is headquartered in Burbank, just outside Los Angeles.

The transaction is valued at $4.05 billion -- based on current stock value -- with Disney paying about half in cash and issuing approximately 40 million shares at closing. Lucasfilm is 100 percent owned by Lucas.

Lucas, who runs his company from its San Francisco base, added: "For the past 35 years, one of my greatest pleasures has been to see Star Wars passed from one generation to the next.

"It's now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers. I've always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime."

The first "Star Wars" film came out in 1977, and there have been two trilogies -- three films from 1977-1983 and three prequels from 1999-2005 -- while the brand has expanded into theme parks and a huge merchandising arm.

The movies have earned some $4.4 billion at the box office globally over the last 35 years, and offer "a virtually limitless universe of characters and stories to drive continued feature film releases," said Disney.

"The franchise provides a sustainable source of high quality, branded content with global appeal and is well suited for new business models including digital platforms," it added.

The acquisition comes after Disney's takeover of animated film giant Pixar and comic book character-driven Marvel Studios.

Those deals had "demonstrated the company's unique ability to fully develop and expand the financial potential of high quality creative content with compelling characters and storytelling," said Disney.

Lucas will be succeeded as head of Lucasfilm by his current co-chairman, Kathleen Kennedy, who will report to Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn, said the Disney statement.

"I'm confident that with Lucasfilm under the leadership of Kathleen Kennedy, and having a new home within the Disney organization, Star Wars will certainly live on and flourish for many generations to come," said Lucas.

"Disney's reach and experience give Lucasfilm the opportunity to blaze new trails in film, television, interactive media, theme parks, live entertainment, and consumer products," he added.

CANADA: A Powerful 7.7 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Canada's Pacific Coast; Tsunami Warning Issued For Oregon, N. California And Hawaii

NOAA NEWS UPDATE 10:54pm: Tsunami advisory extended to N. California, Oregon; warning remains for coastal British Columbia, Alaska.

SKY NEWS UPDATE 10:46pm: Tsunami warning issued for Hawaii following magnitude 7.7 earthquake off west coast of Canada.

CBC NEWS ALERT UPDATE 9:32pm: After 7.7 quake on B.C.'s Haida Gwaii, aftershocks measured at 5.8 and 4.8. "Small" tsunami detected in Pacific. No damage known yet.

The Vancouver Sun
written by Kirstin Endemann and Gillian Shaw
Saturday October 27, 2012

A tsunami warning is in effect for the British Columbia coast after a major magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck the Queen Charlotte Islands region at 8:04 p.m. local time Saturday night.

The epicenter of the earthquake was located 198 kilometres south-southwest of Prince Rupert at a depth of 10 km in a seismically active region, said the U.S. Geological Survey and Earthquakes Canada, who measured the quake at a magnitude of 7.7. Earthquake Canada initially measured it at magnitude 7.1 but altered their report later Saturday.

The U.S. Geological Survey also measured two aftershock at magnitude 5.8 at 8:14 p.m. and magnitude 4.8 at 8:52 p.m. PDT.

The Alaska Tsunami Warning Center and Environment Canada both issued a tsunami warning for the area from the northern tip of Vancouver Island to Cape Decision, Alaska.

They and other emergency officials advised all coastal residents in those areas to move to higher ground, stay away from all harbours, inlets, including those sheltered from the sea, and not return to such areas until directed to do so by local emergency officials. People were asked to keep phone lines clear and listen to the radio for updates and instructions.

Waves were expected to arrive at Langara by 21:16 PDT and the northern tip of Vancouver Island by 21:17 PDT on October 27, Environment Canada reported.

Emergency Info BC said the first waves seen are usually not the largest, and the waves can go on for several hours. Information about dealing with an emergency is available at their website, as are the latest updates to the tsunami warning: www.emergencyinfobc.gov.bc.ca

In Tofino, tsunami sirens sounded for at least an hour Saturday night as residents evacuated to higher ground.

Paul and Lisa Jarvis, of the band Mojave, live in Tofino and first learned of the earthquake in an emergency text.

“My wife and I are on emergency social services and we got a text saying ‘please unlock the community centre, people are evacuating there,’” said Paul Jarvis, who, along with his wife is a volunteer in emergency social services and lives close to the community centre. While it's on the highest ground in Tofino, Jarvis said their house is close to the beach.

“The sirens were going off for at least the last hour -- then they went on again for about five minutes,” he said.

Paul said soon cars had overfilled the small community centre parking lot and were parked along the road as some 200 people rushed to the centre, parents with children bundled in coats over their pyjamas and people carrying water and food supplies.

“People got their supplies and got out to the community centre,” said Paul, adding that another 200 went to the local school, also on high ground and the site that had previously had been designated for evacuations.

“It is just an advisory, not actually a warning. People are just being safe,” he said.

Paul said Tofino Mayor Perry Schmunk was the community centre speaking to residents who had evacuated there.

Shortly after the quake struck, Schmunk posted a warning on Twitter and on his Facebook page: “Tofino has activated Tsunami Warning system if your in a low lying area of Tofino please proceed to the community hall ASAP.”

Earthquakes Canada seismologist John Cassidy said the major quake was felt across much of north-central B.C., including Haida Gwaii, Prince Rupert, Quesnel, Houston and Kamloops.

He said no injuries had been reported from the quake itself as it occurred far offshore, though it was large enough to cause extensive damage if located in habited areas. He could not speak to the possible damage from a related tsunami.

The "slip" quake was caused by two tectonic plates — the North American and Pacific plates — sliding past each other along the Queen Charlotte Fault, he added.

Cassidy said that though the Queen Charlotte Fault where this occurred is seismically active, experiencing in recent years earthquakes of magnitude 6 to 6.5, this is the largest quake measured there since a 8.1 magnitude one in 1949.

He said a quake of that size will come with aftershocks over the next few days.

"People should be aware of those and know what to do in the event of an aftershock, which is get under a desk or table and protect yourself from falling object, mostly."

Visit www.tsunami.gov for more information about the Tsunami alert or follow @EmergencyInfoBC on Twitter.

A Special Story About A Man And His Dog! A Person's True Character Is Revealed By How They Treat Animals... And Other People!

A Man and His Dog

A man and his dog were walking along a road. The man was enjoying the scenery, when it suddenly occurred to him that he was dead.

He remembered dying, and that the dog walking beside him had been dead for years.. He wondered where the road was leading them.

After a while, they came to a high, white stone wall along one side of the road. It looked like fine marble. At the top of a long hill, it was broken by a tall arch that glowed in the sunlight.

When he was standing before it he saw a magnificent gate in the arch that looked like mother-of-pearl, and the street that led to the gate looked like pure gold. He and the dog walked toward the gate, and as he got closer, he saw a man at a desk to one side.

When he was close enough, he called out, "Excuse me, where are we?"

"This is Heaven, sir," the man answered. "Wow! Would you happen to have some water?" the man asked.

"Of course, sir.. Come right in, and I'll have some ice water brought right up." The man gestured, and the gate began to open.

"Can my friend," gesturing toward his dog, "come in, too?" the traveler asked.

"I'm sorry, sir, but we don't accept pets."

The man thought a moment and then turned back toward the road and continued the way he had been going with his dog.

After another long walk, and at the top of another long hill, he came to a dirt road leading through a farm gate that looked as if it had never been closed. There was no fence.

As he approached the gate, he saw a man inside, leaning against a tree and reading a book.

"Excuse me!" he called to the man. "Do you have any water?"

"Yeah, sure, there's a pump over there, come on in."

"How about my friend here?" the traveler gestured to the dog.

"There should be a bowl by the pump."

They went through the gate, and sure enough, there was an old-fashioned hand pump with a bowl beside it.

The traveler filled the water bowl and took a long drink himself, then he gave some to the dog.

When they were full, he and the dog walked back toward the man who was standing by the tree.

"What do you call this place?" the traveler asked.

"This is Heaven," he answered.

"Well, that's confusing," the traveler said. "The man down the road said that was Heaven, too."

"Oh, you mean the place with the gold street and pearly gates? Nope. That's hell."

"Doesn't it make you mad for them to use your name like that?"

"No, we're just happy that they screen out the folks who would leave their best friends behind."

Love, Wealth, or Success? An Inspirational Story with Wisdom

Love, Wealth, or Success?
An Inspirational Story with Wisdom

A woman came out of her house and saw 3 old men with long white beards sitting in her front yard. She did not recognize them. She said "I don't think I know you, but you must be hungry. Please come in and have something to eat." "Is the man of the house home?", they asked. "No", she said. "He's out." "Then we cannot come in", they replied.

In the evening when her husband came home, she told him what had happened. "Go tell them I am home and invite them in!" The woman went out and invited the men in.

"We do not go into a House together," they replied. "Why is that?" she wanted to know. One of the old men explained: "His name is Wealth," he said pointing to one of his friends, and said pointing to another one, "He is Success, and I am Love." Then he added, "Now go in and discuss with your husband which one of us you want in your home."

The woman went in and told her husband what was said. Her husband was overjoyed. "How nice!!", he said. "Since that is the case, let us invite Wealth. Let him come and fill our home with wealth!" His wife disagreed. "My dear, why don't we invite Success?" Their daughter-in-law was listening from the other corner of the house. She jumped in with her own suggestion: "Would it not be better to invite Love? Our home will then be filled with love!" "Let us agree to our daughter-in-law's advice," said the husband to his wife. "Go out and invite Love to be our guest."

The woman went out and asked the 3 old men, "Which one of you is Love Please come in and be our guest." Love got up and started walking toward the house. The other 2 also got up and followed him.

Surprised, the lady asked Wealth and Success: "I only invited Love, Why are you coming in?" The old men replied together: "If you had invited Wealth or Success. The other two of us would've stayed out, but since you invited Love. Wherever He goes, we go with him.

Wherever there is Love, there is also Wealth and Success!!!

A Love Story! ♥

"Love knows only one time: NOW and only one place: HERE" ~ by Osho

A Love Story
~Author Unknown~

Once upon a time, there was an island where all the feelings lived; Happiness, Sadness, Knowledge, and all the others, including Love. One day it was announced to the feelings that the island would sink, so all repaired their boats and left. Love wanted to persevere until the last possible moment.

When the island was almost sinking, Love decided to ask for help. Richness was passing by Love in a grand boat. Love said "Richness, can you take me with you?" Richness answered, "No, I can't. There is a lot of silver in my boat. There is no place here for you." Love decided to ask Vanity who was also passing by in a beautiful vessel. "Vanity, please help me!" "I can't help you Love. You are all wet and might damage my boat," Vanity answered. Sadness was close by so Love asked for help, "Sadness, let me go with you." "Oh....Love, I am so sad that I need to be by myself." Happiness passed by Love too, but she was so happy that she did not even hear when Love called her!

Suddenly there was a voice, "Come Love, I will take you." It was an elder. Love felt so blessed and overjoyed that he even forgot to ask the elder his name. When they arrived at dry land, the elder went his own way. Love realizing how much he owed the elder, asked Knowledge, another elder. "Who helped me?" "It was Time," Knowledge answered. "Time?" asked Love. "But why did Time help me?" Knowledge smiled with deep wisdom and answered, "Because, only Time is capable of understanding how great Love is."

Immature Love vs Mature Love; Another Amazing Insightful Message By Osho... ♥

Immature Love vs Mature Love

Immature people falling in love destroy each other's freedom, create a bondage, make a prison. Mature persons in love help each other to be free; they help each other to destroy all sorts of bondages. And when love flows with freedom there is beauty. Then love flows, with dependence there is ugliness.

A mature person does not fall in love, he or she rises in love. Only immature people fall; they stumble and fall down in love. Somehow they were managing and standing. Now they cannot manage and they cannot stand. They were always ready to fall on the ground and to creep. They don't have the backbone, the spine; they don't have the integrity to stand alone.

A mature person has the integrity to stand alone. And when a mature person gives love, he or she gives without any strings attached to it. When two mature persons are in love, one of the great paradoxes of life happens, one of the most beautiful phenomena: they are together and yet tremendously alone. They are together so much that they are almost one. Two mature persons in love help each other to become more free. There is no politics involved, no diplomacy, no effort to dominate. Only freedom and love.

The Sky Full of Stars... What More Do You Need?

This beatiful message below should help you put things into perspective. But I would also like to share one of my own personal messages that helped me in my early 20's. My boss/mentor used to always tell me "Don't sweat the small stuff." To which I asked, "What is the small stuff." and he replied, "EVERYTHING." :)

The Sky Full of Stars... What More Do You Need?

Misery is an indication that you are going astray, a natural indication that you have lost track of truth. Bliss simply says that you are falling in line with the whole. Things are becoming harmonious, the garden of the Beloved is coming closer: the air feels cooler, winds bring the fragrance of the flowers, freshness, a new thrill, a new enthusiasm. Then you are moving towards the garden of the Beloved. Maybe you cannot see yet, but the direction is right.

Sometimes it happens that you become one, in some rare moment. Watch the ocean, the tremendous wildness of it -- and suddenly you forget your split, your schizophrenia; you relax. Or, moving in the Himalayas, seeing the virgin snow on the Himalaya peaks, suddenly a coolness surrounds you and you need not be false because there is no other human being to be false to. You fall together. Or, listening to beautiful music, you fall together. Whenever, in whatsoever situation, you become one, a peace, a happiness, a bliss, surrounds you, arises in you. You feel fulfilled. There is no need to wait for these moments -- these moments can become your natural life. These extraordinary moments can become ordinary moments -- that is the whole effort of Zen.

Don't wait for some great bliss to descend on you. It never happens. Great bliss is nothing but small pleasures accumulating in your being. The total of all the small pleasures is the great bliss. Eating, enjoy it. Drinking, enjoy it. Taking a bath, enjoy it. Walking, enjoy it. Such a beautiful world, such a beautiful morning, such beautiful clouds... what else do you need to celebrate? The sky full of stars... what more do you need to be prayerful? The sun rising from the east...what more do you need to bow down? And amidst a thousand and one thorns a small roseflower arises, opening its buds, so fragile, so vulnerable, yet so strong, so ready to fight with the wind, with the lightning, with the thunderings. Look at the courage... what more do you need to understand trust?

USA: Extra! Extra! Read All About It - Superman Quits The Daily Planet – Over The State Of Journalism

The Telegraph UK
written by Mark Hughes, New York
Tuesday October 23, 2012

Superman's alter ego Clark Kent is to quit The Daily Planet newspaper in protest at the state of modern journalism.

For more than 70 years Superman has fought off a host of enemies, who have tried and failed to get the better of him.

But finally the Man of Steel has been worn down, to the point of submission.

It is not his arch nemesis Lex Luthor who has finally defeated Clark Kent however, rather it is the state of modern journalism.

In a new edition published on Wednesday, Clark Kent will quit the newspaper for which he has worked almost continuously since the superhero's inception in 1938.

According to the man who wrote the script, Clark Kent is likely to become an online blogger rather than attempt to find work at another of Metropolis's media outlets.

His bombshell departure will take place in the latest DC Comics offering, Superman 13.

Kent is summoned to the office of Perry White, the Planet's publisher, and given a dressing down for his lack of stories.

When Kent complains that it has been a "slow news week" he is told, by Lois Lane, now a television producer, that it is a poor excuse, prompting him to begin a rant about the state of modern journalism which ends with him quitting the paper.

"Why am I the one sounding like a grizzled ink-stained wretch who believes news should be about – I don't know – news?" he asks.

His question prompts White to respond with a devastating critique of newspaper journalism: "Times are changing and print is a dying medium.

"I don't like it but the only hope we have of delivering any news at all is to give the people what they want to read and God help me if a front-page story about some reality star gets them to pick up a paper and maybe stumble on some real news " the publisher continues.

After a second heated discussion with Morgan Edge, the paper's owner, Kent quits.

Scott Lobdell, the writer behind the script, explained his motives behind Superman's departure from the Planet in an interview with USA Today.

"This is really what happens when a 27-year-old guy is behind a desk and he has to take instruction from a larger conglomerate with concerns that aren't really his own," he said.

"Superman is arguably the most powerful person on the planet, but how long can he sit at his desk with someone breathing down his neck and treating him like the least important person in the world?"

Asked about where the superhero might next find gainful employment, Lobdell added: "He is more likely to start the next Huffington Post or the next Drudge Report than he is to go find someone else to get assignments or draw a paycheck from."

It is not the first time Clark Kent has left the Daily Planet. When Galaxy Broadcasting bought The Daily Planet in 1971, he had a short spell as a broadcaster before returning to the paper.

A spokesman for DC comics confirmed the departure: "This is not the first time in DC Comics history that Clark Kent has left the Planet, and this time the resignation reflects present-day issues – the balance of journalism vs. entertainment, the role of new media, the rise of the citizen journalist, etc."

SOUTH AFRICA: South African Mining Strikes Cost $1.2 Billion in Lost Output

Bloomberg news
written by Mike Cohen
Thursday October 25, 2012

Strikes in South Africa cut mining production by 10.1 billion rand ($1.15 billion) this year, curbing tax revenue, exports and jobs, the National Treasury said.

The strikes “have dented confidence and lowered growth prospects for the remainder of the year,” the Treasury said in the mid-term budget, released in Cape Town today.

Violent labor unrest in the mining industry intensified this year, starting in January with a stoppage by workers at Impala Platinum Holdings Ltd. (IMP), the world’s second-largest platinum producer, that left four people dead. At least 46 people died during an illegal six-week strike that began Aug. 10 at Lonmin Plc (LMI)’s Marikana platinum mine, 34 of them killed by police as they tried to disperse protesters. Labor stoppages have shut shafts owned by AngloGold Ashanti Ltd. (ANG) and Gold Fields Ltd. (GFI), prompting the companies to start processes to fire more than 20,000 workers.

“Declining mining output and the spread of strike activity has depressed activity in related industries including manufacturing, logistics and services,” the Treasury said. “The impact will be larger if strike activity is protracted.”

Mining output fell 3.3 percent in the year through August, with production of platinum group metals slumping 15.3 percent from a year earlier, the Treasury said. Lower platinum, gold and coal output was partially offset by increased output of iron ore spurred by strong demand from China, it said.

Growth Forecasts

Africa’s largest economy will probably expand 2.5 percent this year, down from a previous estimate of 2.7 percent, the Treasury said. Growth is set to accelerate to 3 percent in 2013, down from 3.6 percent estimated in February. The reduction in mining production because of the strikes is equivalent to about 0.3 percent of gross domestic product.

The government has made the re-establishment of “orderly labor relations” a priority, according to the Treasury.

President Jacob Zuma ordered a judicial probe, led by retired Supreme Court Judge Ian Farlam, into the police shooting at Marikana on Aug. 16 and the deaths of 10 people, including two policemen, before that. Police used automatic weapons and live ammunition to disperse a crowd of about 3,000 strikers, some of them armed with machetes and sticks.

DEMOCRACTIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO: Local Mayi Mayi Militia Kill Two Park Rangers In Africa's Oldest National Park; Home To One Of The Last Remaining Populations Of Mountain Gorillas

The term Mai-Mai or Mayi–Mayi refers to any kind of community-based militia group active in the Second Congo War and its aftermath in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), formed to defend their local territory against other armed groups. Most were formed to resist the invasion of Rwandan forces and Rwanda-affiliated Congolese rebel groups, but some may have formed to exploit the war for their own advantage by looting, cattle rustling or banditry.

In May 2007, Mai Mai killed two wildlife officers in Virunga National Park and threatened to kill mountain gorillas if the government retaliated. The Mai Mai are also suspected of the killings of nine mountain gorillas, with the use of machetes, and automatic weapons. [soure: wikipedia]

Two park rangers and a soldier were killed in a firefight with armed militia in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, where rebels have transformed Africa's oldest national park into a war zone, officials said on Friday.

Congo's rugged eastern borderlands are among the world's most biodiverse areas and are home to one of the last remaining populations of mountain gorillas. But they have also been at the center of nearly two decades of armed conflict, which have left millions dead.

Rangers from Congo's national parks authority (ICCN) were on patrol with an army escort on Thursday when they were ambushed by local Mayi Mayi militia, Emmanuel de Merode, director of Virunga National Park, said.

"They came under attack from a quite substantial Mayi Mayi unit ... It was very heavy fire received. Two of our rangers were killed on the spot and one soldier. Three others were injured," de Merode told Reuters.

The attack took place on the western side of Lake Edward, near the border with Uganda, and may have been linked to the arrest of 10 Mayi Mayi fighters last week by the ICCN, according to de Merode.

Originally traditional warriors who said they protected their communities with the help of supernatural powers, many Mayi Mayi groups are now little more than mercenaries and are blamed for some of the conflict's worst human rights abuses.

"There is a lot of tension between the park rangers and the Mayi Mayi at the moment ... The rangers have tended to be the last to leave when areas are taken over by militia, so they bear the brunt of the violence," he said.

Rangers have regularly found themselves caught in the crossfire between the army and Congolese rebels, who use Virunga's thick forests and mountainous terrain as their base.

The region's famous mountain gorillas are also at risk with fighting raging around them, although de Merode said park officials had registered two gorilla births since the latest outbreak of violence began in March.

MEXICO: Eight Naked Bodies With Throats Cut Found Dumped On The Street In Mexico City Suburb; Another Two Bodies Found On A Nearby Street Died From Gunshot Wounds

MEXICO CITY - Authorities on Thursday discovered eight corpses, six of them showing signs of torture, on the outskirts of Mexico City, where drug-related violence has mounted in recent weeks.

Police in Ecatepec, a poor suburb north of the capital with close to 2 million people, found the bodies of five men and one woman dumped on the street, a police spokeswoman said.

"They were all naked and showed signs of torture," she said. "It also appeared their throats had been cut."

Separately, police found the bodies of two men aged between 18 and 22 on a nearby street. Both died from gunshot wounds.

Authorities have not yet identified the bodies and had no suspects in either crime, the spokeswoman said.

Ecatepec lies in the State of Mexico, a region that borders the capital to the north where over half the population of greater Mexico City lives.

More than 60,000 people have died in violence linked to drug trafficking since outgoing President Felipe Calderon launched a military crackdown on drug cartels after taking office six years ago.

Mexico City has been a relatively safe haven in the battle, but clashes between gangs in the surrounding states have raised concerns about a spread of the conflict to the capital.

In September authorities deployed troops to the eastern suburb of Nezahualcoyotl, as a local feud between two cartels spilled over into the streets.

Until 2011, the State of Mexico was governed by incoming President Enrique Pena Nieto, who takes office in December. He has pledged to continue the fight against organized crime.

According to a tally of drug war deaths kept by newspaper Reforma, the State of Mexico is on course to suffer its heaviest death toll this year since Calderon launched his offensive, at a time when the national count has eased somewhat.

Ecatepec is the home turf of Pena Nieto's successor as state governor, Eruviel Avila, who was mayor of the municipality.

Both are members of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), which ruled Mexico between 1929 and 2000. Critics accuse the PRI of turning a blind eye to the drug trade while in power.

USA: New York 'Cannibal Cop' Gilbert Valle Arrested After Hatching Plots To Kidnap, Cook And Eat At Least 100 Women! Great Screening Process :o

Until this week, Gilberto Valle was just another New York cop, who lived in suburban Queens with his wife and young child.

He’d been with the force for six years. “He wanted to shoot to the top,” according to a long-standing acquaintance who spoke to the New York’s Daily News.

But now the 28-year-old stands accused of possessing much more sinister ambitions which have earned him the grisly tag of “cannibal cop”.

A complaint filed in a city court alleges that, while outwardly vowing to protect the people of New York, Valle acting in concert with a handful of co-conspirators, was engineering a depraved plot to kidnap, rape, cook and eat a succession of unsuspecting women.

“I love that she is asleep right now not having a clue of what we have planned,” he is accused of telling an associate in one instance, adding: “She does look tasty, doesn’t she?”

Authorities first caught wind of the plans when Valle’s wife reportedly stumbled upon incriminating records on his computer. She is said to have alerted the FBI last month, setting off an investigation that resulted in the cop’s detention on Thursday.

Among the ghoulish clues allegedly uncovered by a search of Valle’s machine was a database of targets. The defendant “had created files pertaining to at least 100 women”, at least 10 of whom “confirmed... that Valle is known to them”, according to the complaint. He is alleged to have stalked at least two of the women, at least once in uniform in his police car. Valle – an avid Yankees fan, according to the New York Post – is also accused of accessing national police records for information on at least one target.

In one case, he is said to have lunched with his intended prey, referred to in the complaint as Victim-1. Discussing her with a co-conspirator via internet messages, Valle is alleged to have said he planned to “kidnap her right out of her own home”. When asked about the size of his oven, he is recorded as responding: “Big enough to fit one of these girls if I folded their legs.”

Officials claim he had created a document entitled “Abducting and Cooking [Victim-1]: a Blueprint”, listing the target’s “name, date of birth, height, weight and bra size”.

In a section labelled “Materials Needed” he is alleged to have written: “Car (I have it)... Chloroform (refer to website for directions)... Rope (strongest kind to tie her up).” While plotting, he is also alleged to have met Victim-1 for lunch at a restaurant in July.

In the case of Victim-2, Valle is alleged to have possessed more commercial motives. “$5,000 and she is all yours,” he is alleged to have said, adding: “It is going to be so hard to restrain myself... but I am aspiring to be a professional kidnapper.”

On Thursday, Valle’s lawyer, Julia Gatto, attempted to secure bail by saying that he was only guilty of a “deviant fantasy”. “There’s no actual crossing the line from fantasy to reality,” she said.

The plea was turned down by Judge Henry Pitman, who called the charges “profoundly disturbing”. Valle’s actions, the judge said, “suggest more than just talk”. Prosecutors, meanwhile, said the investigation was ongoing, suggesting the possibility of further arrests.

USA: Manhattan Nanny Accused Of Stabbing Two Children To Death That Were In Her Care Ages 2 and 6; Then Tried To Kill Herself

The New York Post

Friday October 26, 2012

A Manhattan mom out running errands returned to her luxury Upper West Side apartment last night and walked into a nightmare — her two young children had been stabbed to death by their nanny, who then slit her own throat in a suicide attempt, police sources said.

The mother, Marina Krim, arrived at her West 75th Street home at 5:34 p.m. after nanny Yoselyn Ortega, 50, failed to meet her for swimming lessons with the kids she was watching — Leo, 2, and Lucia, 6.

The building’s doorman told Krim the nanny hadn’t left, and she went upstairs to find the reason for the hold-up. She found Ortega slashing her own neck, with both her wrists already slit and bleeding.

Krim rushed to the bathroom of the second-floor apartment and found Leo and Lucia in the tub, lying in a pool of blood with stab wounds all over their bodies.

“Something happened to my kids!” screamed the sobbing mom, who wrapped the nanny’s neck with a towel.

The doorman, Glen Loody, heard her and called 911. “She was crying. She was screaming,” he said.

The kids appeared to be breathing as they were rushed to St. Luke’s Hospital but were pronounced dead on arrival.

Krim and her surviving middle child, Nessie, 3, — who did not see the carnage — were also taken to St. Luke’s, where Krim had to be sedated.

Ortega, who was is in police custody, was taken to New York-Cornell Hospital, unresponsive, in critical but stable condition. Police believe she may have taken pills, a law-enforcement source said.

She has no criminal record and had not yet been charged with a crime late last night, sources said.

The children’s paternal grandmother, Karen Krim, said Ortega came into the family’s life about a year ago.

Up until then, Marina Krim was a stay-at-home mom and cared for the kids exclusively. The Krims decided to hire a nanny when Leo was born.

Marina and Kevin Krim had been extra careful in hiring Ortega — and even spent nine days with her family in the Dominican Republic beforehand.

“Kevin told me that she was a nice girl,” the grandmother told The Post, sobbing. “How could she do something like that?

“The children were angels.”

Ortega’s niece, Katherine Garcia, 28, said her aunt had seemed a little off and was “acting kind of nervous lately.”

“This is just shocking,” she said. “She loved those kids. I don’t know what would make her do this.”

The children’s father, CNBC executive Kevin Krim, was returning from a business trip to San Francisco and was notified once he arrived in the city last night, a source said.

Police took him to St. Luke’s.

Marina Krim diligently posted thousands of pictures chronicling her beloved children’s lives in an online journal — from apple-picking and family vacations to strolls down Broadway.

In her latest entry, posted just three hours before finding Lucia and Leo dead, the loving mom wrote about her son learning to put words together.

“Leo speaks in the most adorable way possible,” Marina Krim wrote, describing her mood at the time as “amused.”

Neighbors described the Krims as a happy, young family.

“It’s horrifying,” said one resident, who met the nanny for the first time Wednesday.

“She was very quiet — she just stared ahead.”

Another neighbor said, “I just don’t understand. It’s so senseless.

“A nanny would be the last person I’d think would ever do something like that. I’m in shock. Total disbelief.”

Originally from the West Coast, the Krims moved to the building, called the La Rochelle, a couple of years ago.

Just last month, all three kids were at their aunt’s wedding.

Leo was a ring bearer and his sisters were flower girls.

The family pet was a retired racing greyhound named Babar.

This morning, the CEO of Comcast, which controls 51 percent of CNBC parent company NBCUniversal, expressed his sympathy for Krims during the cable company's earnings call.

"The father of the children was part of our CNBC family," CEO Brian Roberts said as he wrapped up the call, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

"So, I just wanted to say on behalf of all of us at CNBC and Comcast and NBCUniversal and many others around the nation how touched and sad we are by this unspeakable act. And we will do anything we can to support the family in [this] awful time. Thank you, all, and we'll go back to our jobs, but have them in our thoughts and prayers."

USA: 4 Teens Charged With Raping Female Student, 18, She Was Gang Raped For Hours In Her University Of Massachusetts Dormatory Room

Four young men from Pittsfield, Mass., are charged with raping a UMass student as she slipped in and out of consciousness. The defense says she texted the suspects that she’d keep quiet for $500 apiece.

Four teens are charged with raping an 18-year-old student at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

Emmanuel Bile, 18, Justin King, 18, Adam Licciardi, 18, and Caleb Womack, 17, of Pittsfield, Mass., allegedly sexually assaulted the woman in her dorm room in the early-morning hours of Oct. 13, the university said in a release.

The alleged victim and the suspects were reportedly drinking vodka beforehand. The young woman reportedly slipped in and out of consciousness during the attacks.

"The victim was crying and used the word ‘no,’" said Jennifer Suhl, chief of the sexual assault unit for the district attorney’s office.

The woman reportedly knew the suspects, who did not attend UMass, and texted them to stay away before the incident, authorities said.

The following day, she told the men via text message that she would keep quiet for $500 apiece, said the defense attorney. The prosecution called the text message a defense tactic, according to Fox 25.

The men were arrested on Friday after a weeklong investigation by the UMass police, reported The Republican newspaper.

"In my entire time on the bench," said the judge, "this is the most egregious set of facts I've ever heard."

The judge set the suspects' bail at $10,000 and said, if they make bail, the suspects must wear GPS tracking.

Licciardi was charged with four counts of rape. The other three were charged with three counts of rape each. All four pleaded not guilty.

Before this arrest, Licciardi was already facing assault and battery with a dangerous weapon charges for, as it is alleged, intentionally hitting a man with his car in August 2011, reported The Berkshire Eagle newspaper.

"The victim and her family are receiving support from our campus resources," said UMass Chancellor Kumble Subbaswamy.
