(Washington D.C.) – Heather R. Higgins, president and CEO of the Independent Women’s Voice released the following statement congratulating Dave Brat on his victory in today’s Republican primary in Virginia.
"The message from Virginia is clear: Dave Brat signed the Repeal Pledge. Eric Cantor did not. Republican primary voters understand that ObamaCare cannot be fixed. It must be repealed. And voters are looking for candidates who will pledge to repeal ObamaCare, period. No excuses. No equivocation.
"Eric Cantor was repeatedly asked to sign the Repeal Pledge. He demurred repeatedly and never did sign. In a related concern for voters, 92% of whom are opposed to the special Congressional exemption from ObamaCare, when Rep. Ron DeSantis offered legislation to undo Congress’s special ObamaCare exemption, Cantor never brought it to a vote on the floor.
"Moreover, Cantor's recent statements about ObamaCare seemed to skip the concept of repeal and led voters to think he meant 'fix.'
Although he tried to correct that impression that was an increasing concern for voters.
"The voters in Virginia were paying attention to candidates who take a stand against ObamaCare. After tonight, every Republican incumbent will be paying attention as well."
The Repeal Pledge advocates not just repeal, but defunding, deauthorizing, and dismantling the misleadingly-titled Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, enacted in early 2010. The Repeal Pledge was designed as a litmus test to help the American public understand which candidates and office holders are serious about repeal, versus those who claim to be but won't actually take action.
Signers of the Repeal Pledge believe that this law cannot be "fixed" and that stopping its implementation and ultimately repealing it are necessary first steps to ensure that citizens and their doctors, not government bureaucrats, have choice and control over their health care, and that medical care in our country becomes more affordable and available.
