At least nine militants were blown up by their own explosives in eastern Kunar province of Afghanistan, local officials said.

The incident took place late Friday night in Dangam district while they were planting an improvised explosive device (IED).

A local security official said the militants were planting an improvised explosive device (IED) in Daro area when the incident took place.

In the meantime, Gen. Zahir Azimi, spokesman for the ministry of defense of Afghanistan said at least five militants were blown up by their own explosives in Dangam district.

Azimi further added that a Taliban commander Qari Shahabuddin was also injured following the explosion.

The anti-government armed (Islamist) militant groups have not commented regarding the report so far.

Kunar is among the volatile provinces in eastern Afghanistan where anti-government armed (Islamist) militant groups are actively operating in its various districts.

Taliban militants frequently use improvised explosive device (IED) as the weapon of their choice to target Afghan and coalition security forces; however the ordinary civilians are normally targeted in roadside bombings.

At least one civilian was killed and two others were injured following an improvised explosive device (IED) explosion in Kunar province last week.

Local government officials said the victims of the incident were all students of a Madarasa.
